Lavender & Romance

Lavender WeddingPerhaps the best place to begin discussing this subject is by mentioning a common historical anecdote often noted in literature about lavender. It refers to the fact that Cleopatra (69 BC - 30 BC), Queen of Egypt was one of the greatest devotees to fragrance and used rose and lavender in most of her aromatic mixtures to seduce both Julius Caesar and Mark Anthony.

If anything, this little juicy morsel of historical gossip gives us a quick timeframe of just how long lavender has been around and its long relationship with romance and love.

In the 16th century, a romantic “language of flowers” was brought to the West from the Ottoman Empire. The language of flowers, sometimes called floriography, became a Victorian-era means of communication in which various flowers and floral arrangements were used to send coded messages, allowing individuals to express feelings which otherwise could not be spoken.

Lavender FlowerIn the language of flowers lavender stands for Love, Devotion and Loyalty. This symbolism quickly re-introduced lavender into the world of romance and solidified a close connection to Cupid.

Young maidens would sip a brew of lavender on St. Luke’s day to find out the identity of their true love, while Alpine girls tucked lavender under their lovers’ pillows, hoping to turn their thoughts to romance, and once married, newly-weds would put bunches of dried lavender under their mattresses to ensure marital passion.

Today, lavender remains a timeless symbol of romance and elegance. Due to its versatility it can be implemented in many different ways for wedding celebrations – we simply cannot imagine a wedding without lavender!

Lavender FarmLavender farms - some of which offer B&B accommodations and/or catering services, are often located in the most spectacular geographical locations.

If you have fantasized about an outdoor wedding in a romantic setting which includes sweeping views and golden sunsets, a lavender farm in full bloom might just do the trick. Lavender Farm

Many lavender farms around the world permit weddings to take place amidst the blooming blue fields. For example, in an article entitled Ten Dazzling Destinations in Canada to Say “I Do”, the Okanagan Lavender Herb Farm made the top 10! Some other farms to consider are: Hood River, Oregon; Maui, Hawaii; Damali Lavender Farm, Vancouver Island; or Purple Haze, Washington.

If you are not keen on celebrating in the great outdoors, but would still like to incorporate the romance of lavender into your wedding day, perhaps one option would be to have the photos done in a field of lavender. Find out if there is a lavender farm near you and give them a call.

Lavender is the ancient herb of love and devotion. It gives off a wonderful calming scent. Fresh lavender flowers are available only in season (June – September for North America) however dried lavender bunches look just as pretty especially when blended in with fresh flowers.

  • Tussie-Mussies: The Victorian Art of Expressing Yourself in the Language of Flowers. Historically a Victorian bridal bouquet, the Tussie-Mussie is a popular arrangement that can be used for any occasion.  The Tussie-Mussie is a small, compact cluster of flowers with bound stems creating an ultra-charming round bouquet. From a dainty fingertip bouquet to a more lavish creation, the Tussie-Mussie can be designed to be hand-held or slipped into your favourite vase. The Tussie-Mussie is a perfect-sized bouquet for bridesmaids, as a centrepiece or even works well as a seating card.
  • Lavender Wands: Lavender wands are crafted out of fresh lavender stems. They add a touch of whimsy and elegance to a wedding table and can also be offered as gifts.
  • Lavender Wreaths: Lavender wreaths come in many shapes and sizes. They add an elegant touch to your wedding decoration.

  • Lavender Champagne: Infuse your champagne with fresh or dried lavender or make a quick and easy lavender syrup:

Ingredients:

½ cup of sugar
1 tablespoon culinary lavender
1 bottle of dry Champagne or sparkling wine, chilled
Lavender buds for garnish

Bring sugar and ½ cup of water to boil in a saucepan, stirring to dissolve sugar. Stir in culinary lavender. Remove from heat. Let cool completely. Strain out lavender. Refrigerate syrup until ready to serve (up to 1 month).

At time of serving pour 1½ teaspoons of syrup into each flute and fill up with Champagne – garnish each with some lavender buds.

  • Lavender & Chocolate: The secret is out! Lavender loves chocolate and vice versa. If you are implementing elements of chocolate into your wedding, add a simple twist with culinary lavender. Lavender can be infused into chocolate desserts, it can be baked into the cake, or it can be used as decorative dessert “sprinkles”. Organic, delicious and extraordinary!

Amethyst Gemstone

Lavender Amethyst CrystalThis crystalline quartz in shades of purple, lilac or mauve is called amethyst. Surprisingly this gemstone shares not only the lavender hues, but also its properties. Amethyst is said to be used as a dream stone and to help insomnia. Put an amethyst under your pillow to bring about pleasant dreams, or rub it across your forehead to offer relief from a headache.

It is relatively inexpensive – as a matter of fact it is the official gemstone of Ontario, Canada due to its plentiful occurrence along Lake Superior.
