Your Lavender Wedding Guide This is a quick guide exemplifying some ideas on how to implement the beauty, elegance, fragrance, hue and flavour of natural organic lavender to your (big or small, casual or formal, summer or winter, contemporary or traditional, unicultural or multicultural, morning or evening, indoor or outdoor) wedding celebration!
If anything, this little juicy morsel of historical gossip gives us a quick timeframe of just how long lavender has been around and its long relationship with romance and love. In the 16th century, a romantic “language of flowers” was brought to the West from the Ottoman Empire. The language of flowers, sometimes called floriography, became a Victorian-era means of communication in which various flowers and floral arrangements were used to send coded messages, allowing individuals to express feelings which otherwise could not be spoken.
Young maidens would sip a brew of lavender on St. Luke’s day to find out the identity of their true love, while Alpine girls tucked lavender under their lovers’ pillows, hoping to turn their thoughts to romance, and once married, newly-weds would put bunches of dried lavender under their mattresses to ensure marital passion. Today, lavender remains a timeless symbol of romance and elegance. Due to its versatility it can be implemented in many different ways for wedding celebrations – we simply cannot imagine a wedding without lavender!
If you have fantasized about an outdoor wedding in a romantic setting which includes sweeping views and golden sunsets, a lavender farm in full bloom might just do the trick. Many lavender farms around the world permit weddings to take place amidst the blooming blue fields. For example, in an article entitled Ten Dazzling Destinations in Canada to Say “I Do”, the Okanagan Lavender Herb Farm made the top 10! Some other farms to consider are: Hood River, Oregon; Maui, Hawaii; Damali Lavender Farm, Vancouver Island; or Purple Haze, Washington. If you are not keen on celebrating in the great outdoors, but would still like to incorporate the romance of lavender into your wedding day, perhaps one option would be to have the photos done in a field of lavender. Find out if there is a lavender farm near you and give them a call. Lavender is the ancient herb of love and devotion. It gives off a wonderful calming scent. Fresh lavender flowers are available only in season (June – September for North America) however dried lavender bunches look just as pretty especially when blended in with fresh flowers.
